But there are somethings I do think it worth bringing to the attention of my readers. In yesterday’s Daily Telegraph blog section a rather strange article called “The scaremongering witchdoctors of Peta are trying to link autism and dairy products. There is no link“. The article is penned, or should I say pixeled, by a bloke called Damian Thompson who is the Editor of the Telegraph blog section.
The gist of the blog post, as I understand it and correct me if I am wrong, is that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is suggesting that their is some evidence for dairy products having a link with autism.
Now this is not a total new one on me (diet and autism, it is often said, are commented) but I can really tease out the argument from Thompson’s article. Which is why I am writing this post in the first place.
Does anyone have any more information of the subject?
For example have you found eliminating dairy products from you or a loved ones diet have had any impact upon the various ASD related behaviours.
I ask because I’m genuinely interested. Our son John is not big of milk and cheese. He likes the occasional cup of milk and has a cheese sandwich a few times a month. White bread of course!
Please share share your thoughts and experiences about dairy and autism in the comments section below.
Thanks in advance.
My brother eats ice cream. And yoghurts in the form of frube tubes or safari tubes. He doesn’t like milk, though he used to have it in Weetabix and macaroni cheese: he doesn’t like this either anymore
I also wrote a blog on this topic. The gist of the latest information I have is this: The body creates an immune system reponse to Gluten (and Casein, a protein found in dairy products). This causes the immune system to go into overdrive and “fight” the infection. One theory mentions that this may damage the white blood cells, who leave the area and travel all over the body via the blood stream. These cells are inflamed, due to the damage. They may settle in the brain and that causes a response. Its very interesting and I’m glad there is more research in reference to GI issues. I have two autistic children. One is high functioning the other is severe neither drank milk. fj is right. My daughter eats cheese but neither child has worsened or improved.
My son has high functioning Austims and is 95% dairy-free due to an early dairy allergy (he out grew allergy, but just doesn’t like it, so no cheese, drinks rice milk, etc). He still has autism and I see no worsening of the symptoms when he does have it.
To meI would think Talking about MS or any health topic is raising awareness. Also the sights and blogs that we see on FB must also be of benefit to anyone who needs advice or educating on any health matter that we endure or even if we do not personally it is still educating the ones who have an interest in expanding their knowledge. Some people are quiet about things and some are eager to know more, its a personal thing isn’t it really? If I didn’t want to know ,I simply wouldn’t read it but I do not think it up to me or others to try and destroy the way of knowledge to those who need it.I don’t know much about Ms Myself but I know its tiring and causes weakness and things like that.A doctor told me It was thought for me as I have experienced weakness in both my arms sometimes (not 1 arm,Both) It hasn’t happened lately though but I do have Arthritus in my neck which made really woooozy ,sometimes I get woozy now but Not as much As I did Before I had tests done,CT scan over a year ago now.I take Panadol osteo 3 times a day most days now and then 2 times but usually the 3 times.Along with the Bp tablet,colestrol,cartia,coq10 1nd multi vitamin, galic and horse radish (I should rattle shouldn’t I?)I am trying to avoid having to have n injection in my neck(I don’t like needles) and now I get arthritis pain in my left elbow too.I am 57 now and have had many struggles in life with Kenny and someone else That I love too which I wont say who but I try and go on each day and do the best I can.THere are so many things that are in the world to keep us struggling but when people like you are trying to help and doing your best to make this a better world with maybe cures or easier to manage and taking time to CARE well it helps people emotionally to cope and the only thing I really know what to do is to wish you well and again to say thankyou….Bye…..Yes I think your sights would be successful….Bless you All.
My son is 21 tis year in September and when he was in primary school age I did have him on a wheat and dairy free diet.I was told that it was worth a try to eliminate gluten which is in wheat ,barley rhye and oats and as well casein in dairy products so I tried to do this but Kenny ia so quick when it comes to food and he pften took other peoples food and that broke his diet after all my efforts in baking rice muffins and special breads for him to have. The head teacher did say she thought he was paying more attention more often but it didn’t bring on speech and that’s what I was hoping for it to do was to start talking.Kenny does not talk even now only a word sometimes,he might say go car and no SOMETIMES.I have heard that diet has an important roll in the effects of Autism but I don’t really know as I am just a mother who tried my best for my sons sake.Keeping the children away from the food they cannot have is a very hard task to achieve and every time His diet got broken I felt let down because it never had a fair chance to see if it would work or not.Kenny still has a fair few bowel movements most days too more than what you would say a person should have.He is on a healthy diet where he now lives and drinks water and has never been into drinking hot drinks loke tea or coffee. He likes yogurts and will eat icecream but that’s a treat.Basicly Kenny Loves to eat but it is monitored and served to him at certain times breakfast, lunch and tea time etc.I hope this has been done right from me to explain it to you how it was for me and my son Kenny.I am not real good on the computer and still have much to learn so Im not over confident in getting on all the blogs you have but I comment where I can and hope that when I do Its ok how I have participated in your sight. Can I add I think you are kind and care for all of us who know and deal with a loved one with Autism And I respect you for that so thank you.Kenny is ina grouphome now and has settled there very well and I have a lot of input in his life still and see him as much as I can.Bye for now.
