A Survey of Fibromyalgia Patients’ Journey to Diagnosis and Treatment.

Fibromyalgia Survey and Research

Fibromyalgia Survey and Research

We have been asked by Pamela Andrews at PhD student at Glasgow Caledonian University to help her find people with Fibromyalgia to help her with some research.

Andrews writes ” I am a PhD student within the Health and Life Sciences department at Glasgow Caledonian University. I am conducting a study into the journey patients take from presenting with their first symptom through to receiving a diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome and subsequent treatment.

The study requires participants are aged 18 and over and have received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The study will involve an online questionnaire, which will include a series of surveys asking about the journey leading to a diagnosis, what happened immediately following and what treatments were prescribed by your healthcare provider and which ones you researched yourself.

The purpose of this research is to understand the patient journey from the initial symptom to diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Following the diagnosis, the study aims to examine the treatment pathways made available to you and the experiences you have had with this along with the effectiveness on symptoms.

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete an online survey, this survey will ask about:

Journey leading to a diagnosis
Immediately following the diagnosis
Treatments prescribed
Treatments tried

It will take approximately 20mins to complete. Questions asked will either involve selecting from a few options or a sliding scale, in addition you may be asked to give brief responses. If you feel you need to take a break at any time, the survey may be saved and you can then return to it at a later date.”

The link to the survey can be found here.

We have been asked by a student at University of Toronto  to help find young people to take part in research survey.  He says

“My name is Patrick and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. My research examines the physical activity habits of youth diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder through the use of a survey.  I would like to know whether it would be possible for you to pass on this survey to be pilot tested with some of your families to help provide me with some feedback. I am looking to learn whether the survey is written in an accessible manner and whether youth are able to complete it on their own, or with the support of a parent/caregiver. ”

The Barriers and Facilitators to Parents Using Aided Language Modelling

Researcher Introduction

I am Alicia Posthuma, a fourth year honours student enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy degree at Massey University. This project is being supervised by Associate Professor Helen Southwood and Dr. Sally Clendon.

Project Description and Invitation

I am conducting a survey to explore parents’ perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to using aided language modelling with their children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Children who use AAC are unable to use speech as their primary mode of communication. Instead, they rely on the use of some type of AAC system such as a communication board or an electronic communication device. Aided language modelling refers to a technique in which the communication partner points to symbols/pictures on the child’s communication system while also producing corresponding spoken words during conversations. Research indicates that in order for a child to learn to use his/her AAC system competently, it is important for the child to first see other people model the use of their system frequently throughout the day (aided language modelling).

There is currently little known about parents’ perceptions of using aided language modeling; therefore, your experiences and opinions will be valuable.

I would be very grateful if you would consider participating in the survey for this project.
Participant Identification and Recruitment

I am recruiting parents who:

  • Have children between the ages of 0 and 12 who use AAC.
  • Currently live in New Zealand

I have approached the Talk Link Trust and parent social media networks to request their assistance in distributing information about this project.

Please can you help an OT doctoral student completing autism research

We have been asked to help Jamesdean Visley a student at Huntington University find parents of children with ASD to take part in a survey.

Huntington University - Autism Research

Huntington University – Autism Research

My name is Jamesdean Visley, and I am currently a student at Huntington University’s Entry-Level Doctorate of Occupational Therapy Program, Class of 2017. My research group and I are conducting a survey pertaining to how occupational therapy education for caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is carried over from the clinic, into the home. The title of our research is “Caregivers’ Perspectives on Occupational Therapy Programs for ASD.”

Our goal is to bridge the gap between occupational therapy services received in the clinic to continuing those activities at home. We hope to gain an understanding of what aspects of occupational therapy education parents find effective, and what changes they would like to see happen. We greatly appreciate your time in taking this brief survey, and encourage you to forward to any other families that have children with ASD who are receiving occupational therapy services.
