World Autism Awareness Day – What are you hopes and fears for the future of autism awareness?

Autism Awareness Day 2014

Autism Awareness Day 2014

Today as the whole world seems to know is World Autism Awareness Day.  (It does seem amazing how social media has transformed autism awareness or is it just me?)

While thing about the day over breakfast I was pondering where after awareness and acceptance?  With the latest figures of 1 in 68 being diagnosed with ASD this is going to become a pretty important question.

Remembering that I had spent two decades in the world of survey research I realised that the best people to answer this question is you.

So in this blog I would like to ask a very simple question what are you hopes and fears for the future of autism awareness?

It would be great if you could share your thoughts in the comments box below.

Thanks for caring!

  1. I support autism awareness for the hope that as my ASD son grows up in this world he is given the same opportunities as anyone else, that people and society as a whole wont look at autism as a sickness to cure but a different way of being.  i firmly believe being autistic does not make you less just different. i do not need nor want a magic cure all, i think if more people were educated they would see the amazing and special people behind the diagnosis

  2. My hope is that it brings about a desire for more people to be trained in the behaviors..strategies..and teaching styles with our kids. There wouldn’t be conflict but rather resolution with guiding our kids. That parents would not just advocate in schools and the medical field but get their families and friends involved in the learning process. My fear is that people will focus on fixing the diagnosis rather than learning how they can grow and learn from our amazing kids. I’ve learned more about life in 9 years with my son than I think I could ever learn in a classroom.
