The tale of Prince John of the United Kingdom, born John Charles Francis to King George V and Queen Mary in 1905, has often been used as an example of the Royal Family’s cruelty to its own kin. The boy, who had suffered from epilepsy and had exhibited behaviors that suggested autism, was hidden away at a family estate in Sandringham, where visits from his siblings were few and far between. Prince John passed away in his sleep in 1919, three years after he was shuttled off.
