Lidwina the Virgin, (1380-1433), the Catholic patron saint of ice skating and the chronically ill, is believed by many to represent the earliest report of an illness strongly consistent with multiple sclerosis. She experienced paralysis, blindness, vision loss, facial pain, and other symptoms consistent with MS along with periods of remission.
