Welcome to our latest guest post. Owen Parker, father of two autistic children, tell us about weighted blankets and Sensory Goods the company he founded to manufacture them.

Owen shares “Sensory Goods is a company made just to meet the needs of people affected by developmental disorders. We provide an inventory of product designed to meet autism and sensory integration needs. We carry items like weighted and floor products, sensory swings, oral motors and more.

This company was formed by the owner to continue an effort him and his family had been working on since 2006. The effort was to not only bring awareness to autistic and sensory integration needs but also a therapeutic solution at an affordable price. The effort began in 2006 when the owner was informed that his two children were diagnosed with Autism. Just like everyone else, they had to find a way to help their children’s needs on a strict budget. So his family began to make therapy products for their children at home. They had found an affordable way to help with needs and realized so many more people could use the help. They started off with a hand full of products that quickly turned into an entire inventory in hopes to meet the demanding response.

Sensory Goods and its owner try to keep the same perspective to this day, meet autistic and

sensory integration needs while meeting the financial need of those caring for people affected by these developmental disorders.

A week or so ago Barry McMillan of the Helping Lands Loan Store got in touch with us to ask if we could share with our readers a bit more about the work they do for the autism community.

We are delighted to help because we thinking this is just such a brilliant self help idea for the ASD community. Indeed it deserves to be rolled out far and wide even though it is just a UK idea at the

moment.

Brian told us “I run a small non for profit organisation in the Midlands (Telford) where I buy sensory and disability equipment and loan them out to families with special needs children for free – there is no catch. If you can drive to Telford and need the equipment, you can have it. I am trying to reach out to as many families as I can”. So please can you share with anybody who may be interested.

“I have a sensory dark den, a weighted blanket and a disability dodgem, but hope to have more after christmas. We get funds from local parish council grants and our followers on easyfundraising. We

also do a discounted cinema ticket rate which gets us a few pounds, so we are growing slowly, but hope to add to the store. We are trying to get funds for an upsee, a sensory lighting kit and a bubble tube. ” He said.
