What is sensory processing disorder (SPD)? And why it is relevant to the autism community?

As many of you know I’m the part on a ten year old on the autism spectrum.

One of the features of his autism is sensory processing disorder or SPD as it also gets called.

So what does this actually mean?

Well in John’s case all sorts of things.

He can only eat a very limited varied of rather bland foods. This is not picky eating at all but something very different.

He does not like loud noises (with the exception of fireworks) and find music off putting. He like Stockhausen though. But then he loves space and sci-fi!

Anyhow I thought it may be of use to share this great infographic outlining sensory processing disorder (SPD) in more general terms than just autism.

Over to you. Do you suffer from sensory processing disorder (SPD) and how does it present itself? Why not share in the comments box below!

Many thanks in advance!

What are the warning signs of stomach cancer?

I would like to share this with because just over 20 years ago my closed friend at university dies of stomach cancer at the age of 29.

One of the big issues with stomach cancer is the need for early diagnosis. Indeed it has been suggested that an early diagnosis can give a person a 80% survival rate. This show just how important it is for all of us to recognise the signs and symptoms of stomach cancer.

I would ask all of you to read and share this infographic with family and friends. Let’s hope it can save a life.

Many thanks in advance!

Eating Disorders – What are the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder?

Eating Disorders – What are the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder?

It has been a few years since we took a look at eating disorders here at Patient Talk.

With around one in ten of us suffering from an eating disorder (anorexia , bulimia or binge eating) we felt that it would be a great idea to share this very useful infographic with our readers.

We would very much appreciate it if you would share this information with your friends and family!

A Chronic Pain Personal Bill of Rights – which of these do you agree with and what would you add?

As I’ve mentioned a few times on this blog I’ve been working in healthcare information is some form or another for over a decade now.

In my days as a opinion researcher with people in pain a theme regularly came up in interviews of how many people felt – both powerless and overwhelmed by chronic pain.

So I was very interested when one of my readers sent me this infographic which offers some ideas for “A Chronic Pain Personal Bill of Rights”.

I must admit that while I agree with the sentiments of the infographic I have to say I don’t really see how it could be described as a Bill of Rights. No mention of access to decent pain management for instance.

But really that is just me.

What do you think of it? And what would you add to a “Chronic Pain Personal Bill of Rights”? Please do share you thoughts in the comments section below.

Many thanks in advance.
