Non-Verbal Man with Autism Saves Baby’s Life After Facebook Messaging Police
Even though Aaron Cahal has autism and is non-verbal, that didn’t stop him from saving a baby’s life. The 23-year-old uses his iPhone to communicate and frequently uses social media.
When Aaron was in his backyard and heard screams, he messaged the South Point Police with a photo of the location, Facebook writing, “Police we need police, I hear big crying people, scary people.” Authorities were able to find the location and rescue the baby, who is currently being treated at a local hospital.

As many of you will have picked up by now I am very interested in the whole area of social media and healthcare.
Obviously as somebody who runs a healthcare blog I axiomatically believe it to be a “game changer” as our American cousins put it.
But I’ve been wrong before , it will shock you to find, and I will be wrong again!
So to help we find out how we now use social media I am running a series of polls on the subject of which this is the first.
Today I’d like to explore the question “How often, if at all , do you use Facebook for health related or medical information and discussion?”
I’ve set up a poll below and it would be great if you could take part.
I’m also very interested in your views on privacy on Facebook. In particular on how this could/does impact upon your healthcare discussions on the site itself. It would be great if you could share your thoughts on this matter in the comments section below.
Yes I know I go on all the time about healthcare and how social media will change it completely.
(And it’s not just me it seems Newt Gingrich also thinks I’m right).
A few weeks back I was at a very interesting seminar on social media usage and over lunch I was chatting to a lady who also works in healthcare. She worked for a company which provides colostomy bags for ostomates. She mentioned that form their research into online conversation most discussion about colostomy bags had moved from Facebook to Twitter. Indeed she said that their research comparing the two types of social media suggested that 97% of conversations went on now on Twitter.
Now this is a massive change since I started working in the area. And I’m wondering if I’m missing a trick here.
So I’d like to ask a question of my readers “What social media would you recommend for online conversations about health?”
I’ve set up a short poll below but this is limited to the main social media platforms around.
What would be really great is if you could use the comments box below to share any others you use. If you run one yourself that would be of huge interest to both my readers and myself.
Simple the aim is to get the hashtag #curems to trend on Twitter on July 31st 2014.
That is it. You can use social media like Facebook or Twitter to raise awareness of the need for a cure for MS by just using the #curems in all your posts on that day.
You might also wish to post this page to help us with this important campaign.
Thanks very much in advance.
