In the late 1950s and early 1960s thalidomide was hailed as a wonder drug for nausea and insomnia in pregnant women. Soon after, it was discovered that the drug was causing serious birth defects.

Barry de Geest was one of the most severely affected in New Zealand.

Born with physical deformities, Barry wasn’t expected to live long and his mother was encouraged to abandon him.

Today Barry is celebrating 50 years without boundaries. He’s the co-owner of a successful company, proud father, house owner and now he’s found the love of his life!
