Simply put Single-payer healthcare is a system in which the one body , as opposed to private insurers, cover all your healthcare costs.
Indeed it it one of they key areas in the current US presidential election. In the UK it is a governmental body the National Health Service (NHS) which provides the payment while in , say Canada it comes from private organisations. It should be noted that single payer refers to the payor rather than the provider of healthcare. So how might it be funded?
Well according to Physicians for a National Health Program “The program would be funded by the savings obtained from replacing today’s inefficient, profit-oriented, multiple insurance payers with a single streamlined, nonprofit, public payer, and by modest new taxes based on ability to pay. Premiums would disappear; 95 percent of all households would save money. Patients would no longer face financial barriers to care such as co-pays and deductibles, and would regain free choice of doctor and hospital. Doctors would regain autonomy over patient care.”
Our question to you is do you support such a system. Please let us know using the poll below. If you would like to feel free to use the comments boxes below to explain you thinking in more detail.
It would be great if you could also tell us which candidate will be the best person to be in charge of American healthcare.
Thanks in advance!
