One of the recurring topic discussed on our Facebook page AutismTalk is the issue of how long it take to get diagnosed with ASD. You can check out the discussions here https://www.facebook.com/AutismTalk.
In the case of our son John it took around six months from the time that the issue of autism was first mooted to a final diagnosis. You can read more here about his diagnosis (https://patienttalk.org/how-easy-was-it-to-get-your-child-diagnosed-with-autism/) as we$$ as reading the story of others in the same situation.
Now, of course, the time taken to get an autism diagnosis will vary for healthcare system to healthcare system. Even that being said we are very interested to get a feel timescales among our readers.
We have set up a poll whose objective it to find out the length of time it took you or a loved one to get diagnosed with autism or ASD. We are thinking from the first time you contacted a healthcare professional about the symptoms to a final diagnosis.
It would be great if you could tell us more about the process in the comments box below.
Many thanks in advance.
Our son was diagnosed on the Autistic
Spectrum when he was 9 yrs old.
I told my son’s nursery school there was a problem in 2004, asked to see ED PYSCH as he got older in about 2006/7, had him refered to CAMHS in 2008, They said it was ‘parental’ go to behaviour managment classes had him re-refered last year, they refused to see him. Senior school stepped in he has now seen community pediatrician who agreed with me autism, will take about 6 months she said for formal diagnosis. He is now 13 will be 14 by time it is official.
My son started nursery at just 3. I explained to them that I thought there was a problem and they got him speech therapy and a hearing test and eye tests done within 3 months…which was fantastic…. He went for an assessment within 6 months but was only given a vague diagnoses of being complicated… He then had a crisp report done. I wasn’t sure about getting him statemented but got it done while he was still in nursery…. At the age of 4 and half he was reassessed and the diagnosis came back as asd …Ryan had moderate classic autism….his statement was then amended……so even though it took 18 months to get an actual diagnosis I never felt that it was going slowly ashe was constantly being tested and reassessed and visiting speech therapy and the children’s centre…. I was very pleased with how quickly everything was done

my 6 year old son showed signs of ASD when he was 2 1/2 years old after completing his vaccinations. He was born prematurely and is G6pd deficient. He is now on speech and occupational therapy. His accomplishments in special school is our greatest joy.
