This week is Alcohol Awareness Week.
The background is a little difficult to assess but it does seem that we are becoming more aware of the dangers (and benefits) of alcohol. Indeed there is evidence we underestimate the amount of
alcohol we actually consume. Check our http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/feb/27/how-much-alcohol-do-we-really-drink for more information.
But according to Alcohol Concern Britain is losing the fight against alcohol related liver disease.
Eric Appleby, Chief Executive of Alcohol Concern said: “The UK Government is ignoring the growing public health crisis caused by alcohol and we are all paying the price for it. Inaction is simply no longer an option.
“From campaigners, to academics to public health workers and the public itself there is a huge will and desire to make a change to our society’s relationship with alcohol. We’ve now got to convince the government that they too need to play their role too.
“And we know what we need them to do, introduce minimum unit pricing, take action on alcohol advertising and increase treatment levels.”
