I have listed out 5 of the most common and key identifying characteristics of children with autism, so you can help identify if a child maybe on the autism spectrum.

1. Non Response To Name: Autistc children, will be difficult to call by their name as they focus on certain tasks or objects that draw their attention and they zone out of what’s happening around them.

2. Speech Delay: A delay in speech development can indicate a social / communicative issue which is typically associated with an autism spectrum disorder.

3. Solitary Play: Autistic children, have a hard time engaging with other children in play, and there fore will result to a happy solitary play behaviour and find it difficult to invite other children into that play.

4. Hand Flapping & Spinning Around: Hand flapping and spinning around on the spot are called ‘stims’ these are self stimulatory behaviours that occur in people with an autism spectrum disorder.

5. Eye Gaze (tracking from side of eye): Autistic children will have a noticeable eye tracking from the side of their eye. This can be tracking a wall as they walk, but with their eye right to the side.
