Do you know kids who turn off, don’t seem to listen, and don’t follow instructions? Often it’s because we verbally overload them with instructions. Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD struggle to take in instructions. In this video, I’ll share 4 strategies for giving instructions to Autism Spectrum or ADHD kids without overloading them verbally. Here are strategies that you can try:

1. Give them one instruction at a time.

2. Write out the list of instructions, so they have a visual they can use.

3. Have the child sit, close their eyes, and visualize doing the instructions you are giving them.

4. Encourage the child to look around to see what two other kids are doing for cues of what they should be doing next. I call this “See two then see me.”
