What is World Arthritis Day?

World Arthritis Day is a global initiative bringing people together to raise awareness of issues affecting people with RMDs. WAD is recognised every year on 12 OCTOBER and is supported by a year-round global campaign.

RMDs encompass over 200 different diseases and the symptoms can have a serious impact on daily life.2 RMDs can affect people of all ages including children and babies and if not treated appropriately, simple daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, cooking, personal hygiene and working are affected – reducing quality of life and impacting on physical abilities.2

High 5 to EVERYONE affected by rheumatic & musculoskeletal diseases. Who will you #WADHigh5 this World Arthritis Day? http://thndr.it/1VXuMpg #WADHigh5

In Europe alone, rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) affect over 120 MILLION PEOPLE.1 Almost EVERY FAMILY IS AFFECTED and RMDs impact on more individuals than any other disease group.1

It’s time to show support for people with RMDs. Help us to raise awareness of RMDs and bring the RMD community – including people with RMDs, their families and friends, healthcare professionals, carers, researchers, policy-makers and patient organisations – and the wider public together through a common action that is universally recognised and grabs attention – THE HIGH 5.

‘HIGH 5 FOR WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY’ asks people to share virtual High 5s to raise awareness of RMDs and to encourage people to take visible action over RMDs. Our aim is to take social media by storm!

But how? In addition to joining the Thunderclap, there are other ways you can get involved:

  •    Write a name on your hand and take a photo, share the virtual High 5 on social media using the hashtag #WADHigh5
  •    Visit the World Arthritis Day website www.worldarthritisday.org  to find a World Arthritis Day event near you

High 5 World Arthritis Day Campaign 2015 Announced – #WADHigh5

World Arthritis Day

World Arthritis Day

We are very excited to announce that the World Arthritis Day 2015 campaign, ‘

’ has just been launched. World Arthritis Day provides a great opportunity to bring everyone together to raise awareness of issues affecting people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases .

For World Arthritis Day this year, we are asking people to take action and share virtual High 5s on social media, using the hashtag #WADHigh5.

Visit our new campaign website to find out how you can get involved, whether you want to engage in the campaign as an organisation or simply share a High 5 on social media: www.worldarthritisday.org.

‘High 5 for World Arthritis Day’ forms part of the wider 2015-2016 theme: It’s in your hands, take action. This reflects the idea of patient centred care and ‘taking control’ to encourage the active involvement of patients and their families in the design of new care models and in decision-making about individual options for treatment.

Understanding and Lupus – Vision 2043 and World Arthritis Day #worldarthritisday

World Arthritis Day

World Arthritis Day

As promised in our last post on World Arthritis Day here are the results of the Vision 2043 competition.

For this competition people what one thing would make their lives with a rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease easier.

And today sees the winners announced.

The EU winning vision for 2043 is ‘Understanding’ which explains that for Argyri Stara “What has made living with an RMD easier? When I was being given my first blood transfusion the stabbing pain penetrated my heart so violently that I covered my face with the pillow to hide the tears, and just when I thought I was about to faint, I felt someone remove the needle and put it in the other arm. My mom had brought in the nurse. When, for the first time, I needed to give myself injections and thought I could not do it, my sister said she would drive over and do it although she had never done anything like it before. Just hearing that gave me the courage to give myself the first shot. When I was terrified that I might need a kidney transplant, my husband selflessly offered his. It’s excruciatingly difficult living with a severe form of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and its unexpected twists. Love, UNDERSTANDING and the support of my family have given me the strength to live with it.”

Argyri Stara is from Greece and has had arthritis for 14 years.

Help us raise awareness of arthritis and rheumatic or musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) by sharing them with your friends on social media using the hashtag #worldarthritisday.
