A girl with autism who tried to kill herself after spending months in an isolation booth at school has told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme she felt “alone, trapped and no-one seemed to care”.

The teenager – voiced by an actor – had no direct teaching and ate her lunch in the room, away from friends.

Her mother said for months she was unaware of what was happening to her daughter.

The Department for Education says children should be in isolation for no longer than is necessary.

It’s common to hear people claiming that they need another holiday to recover from their holiday, and while this is generally said in jest, it may actually highlight the fact that holidays and travel in general are not quite as relaxing as we intend them to be. Burning the candle at both ends and enjoying yourself combined with the simple act of physical travel itself can put a stress on your body.

There are plenty of little changes you can make to minimise the effect of travel on your body, but there are two major things you definitely need to be aware of. Getting enough sleep and staying hydrated should be your two ‘pillars’ that you should be doing consistently. Failing to stay on top of one of both can quickly leave you feeling overly hungry and tired, which can be a lethal combination when it comes to your fitness and health.

We’re here to help. This handy little infographic by De Vere Hotels gives some highly actionable tips and tactics that you can use to minimize the effects of your travel.
