There is no doubt that poetry has the ability to move us. In fact, our emotions can often be touched by poetry to the extent that it can make us laugh, cry or leave us speechless. Of course, there are some poems that are able to do so easier than others, and this one certainly deserves a place on the list. What may come as a surprise to you is that it was written by a young boy with autism, and even the teacher was shocked.

Benjamin Giroux, a 10 year old student, was given a homework assignment and was asked to write a poem. Rather than just firing off something that rhymed, he took the time to pour out his heart and let people know what it was like to live with autism. The results were astounding.

Benjamin had always felt different because he was autistic and at times, it made him stand out from the other children. His poem, “I Am,” shows his emotions in such a special way and when you read it, you will see he certainly is a special youngster. Since he wrote it, the poem has gone viral and even the National Autism Association highlighted and shared it with others.

I am odd, I am new,
I wonder if you are too,
I hear voices in there,
I see you don’t, and that’s not fair
I want to not feel blue,
I am odd, I am new,
I pretend that you are too,
I feel like a boy in outer space ,
I touch the stars and feel out of place.
I worry what others might think ,
I cry when people laugh , it makes me shrink,
I am odd, I am new,
I understand now that so are you ,
I say I feel like castaway,
I dream of a day that that’s okay ,
I try to fit in,
I hope that someday I do,
I am odd , I am new,+

Meltdowns by Autism Santa

Is it a tantrum or a meltdown.
It’s not an easy thing to know.
Does he really hurt inside.
Or is he putting on a show,

I have dealt with both.
Or maybe they’re the same.
I know not to judge him.
I don’t think this is a game.

Maybe he can’t control it.
This temper I often see.
I wish I could help him.
Or try to set him free.

Rather than adding fuel.
I should step away for now.
But it is not that easy.
I am still learning how.

So for now I’ll tell you this.
It’s not your choice to make.
He is the one who suffers.
I know it is not fake!

Autism Awareness by Autism Santa

I think the world should know.
Autism is here to stay.
In fact it might be growing.
1 in 68 as of today.

So we are asking for a favor.
From you and one and all.
To help us spread the word.
That number will not fall.

So grab a pen and paper.
Or use your Facebook page.
No matter where you live.
No matter what your age.

Perhaps you like to Tweet.
Or sing just like a bird.
Using social media,
The latest craze I have heard.

So go and tell your story.
Or tell it for a friend.
Tell it to the world.
Or who ever will attend.

Tell them about the Spectrum.
Tell it with such clearness.
You can join the cause.

” M S and My Beautiful You” – A poem for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

Te Bigley shares “My wife has MS. I adore her strength. This is MS Awareness Month. I would be ever so grateful if I could share with you and your readers a poem I wrote about her and for her. I wrote this a couple of years ago. She is still determined to beat MS. Yes, she fights like a girl.”

How do you do
The things you do

To always remain
Beautiful You

5:30 am
and your already up
By 6:30 you’ve had
your 2nd
Cup

You wake the kids up out of bed
Make sure there ready for school
Even though
They seem
Like there dead

You play with Allie
And give her a bone
Then you proceed
to clean
our entire home

You haven’t had a second
To sit down
and relax
I wonder
the toll that it’s taking
On your legs
and your back

Now it’s 9am
You head back to our room
For the short time that you’ll take
to get dressed and
groom

Then it’s out the door
And
Off to work you go
Praying,
” It will be busy
and
not to slow.”

You come home
6 hours later
And the pains
setting in
Yet you never complain
When I ask
“how has your day been?”

You just charge
Right through our door….
With this
Electric energy
That somehow you’ve stored

You won’t
Sit on the couch
Or pull up a chair
There is not a minute to spare…..
You just
Head to the kitchen
There’s dinner
To prepare

An hour and a half later
We gather at the table

We say our prayers
before we feast
Can’t help but notice
How little
You always eat

Then there’s dishes to do
Afterwards
Wether your ready
Or not
It’s time to give yourself
another shot.

Soon after
We’re in bed
So you can rest
Your aching head
With a kiss
And another
good nite Darlin
So Blessed
To be said

And Your off fast asleep
Just thankful
To be back in bed

As I lay there
Cherishing
All that you do
I fall asleep,too
staring at

Beautiful You
