Lou Gehrig ALS MND
Four years and a day have passed since the death of my mother in law from Motor Neurone Disease.
In this blog I would like to pay tribute to her and to all the other members of the MND community. It is a condition which does not just affect the people with MND but also their caregivers and families. Indeed the impact is so traumatic for partners of people with MND that it has been suggested that post-diagnosis 50% of partnerships will dissolve due to stress caused by the disease.
So what is Motor Neurone Disease? In fact it refers to a group of neurological disorders which affect the motor neurones of our bodies. This means that people with a motor neurone disease progressively lose control of the movement of their bodies. This affects speech, the ability to swallow and to move the body. The average time from diagnosis to death is 36 months. While the body ceases to function the brain is still as active as before.
The most common form of MND is called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In America it is better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous baseball player who died in 1941 at the age of 37.
Around 6 people in every 100,000 will have the condition at any one time.
