Autism in 2016- so what are your New Year’s resolutions?

Autism is my Super Power

Autism is my Super Power

Welcome to what is going to be a bit of a short post. But I’m interested in finding out if other families are making any autism related New Year’s resolutions?

Our son John is now nine (so in the UK two and a half years off secondary school). And we have a number of goals which we would like for both him to achieve this year. Actually as soon as possible.

These include

a) Getting dressed himself but also not taking his clothes off as soon as he gets home.
b) Developing social skills so that he can take an interest in others. He really only talks about the things he is interested in and in the way he wants to. For example he tried to discuss breast feeding with a neighbour who had just had a baby.
c) To be able to thrive rather than survive in a mainstream schooling environment. I should mention that he spends 50% of his time in “normal” classes but we would like to see more.

So what am I writing this blog?

Well firstly do you have any tips on us achieving the above. If you do it would be great if you could share your comments in the below below?

It would also be wonderful if you could share your autism related New Year’s resolutions with our readers. Again please do use comments section below.

Many thanks in advance!

  1. My daughter Gabriella is 3 and has mild autism. My new year’s resolution is to get her potty trained and to know her name, address and phone number. I also would love for her to be able to dress herself in the the morning but I think that might be reaching a little too far right now

  2. Hi,

We are french and we live in Paris ; my son is 8 and an half, and among my NY resolutions I decided to go hunting for a school of a different king that could welcome him when he turns 1 ; probably the alternative type of teaching like the one from sudbury valley school n the US. My second goal : now that he know how to read, at least a little, I made the resolution that everynight when we read a story to him and to his sister at night, I am going to make him read half the book. it’s easy to implement, it doesn’t mean that I have to magically create a nex time slot ;-), so I guess it’s do-able…
